GMC Oil Lawsuit 2025

If you drive a Chevy or GMC, this lawsuit could hit close to home—and your wallet.

What’s the Deal?

General Motors just lost a big court case. It’s being called the GMC oil lawsuit 2025, and it’s all about how some engines—especially the 5.3-liter V8s—burn oil way too fast. This isn't just annoying; it’s expensive and dangerous.

Here’s what some drivers were dealing with:

  • Sudden stalling while driving

  • Knocking or ticking sounds from the engine

  • Major engine damage that costs thousands to fix

The issue? A faulty design in the engine’s piston rings. The lawsuit says GM knew about the problem since 2010 but kept making the same engines anyway.

What the Court Said about The GMC oil lawsuit 2025

In April 2025, a California jury ordered GM to pay over $102 million to drivers in California, North Carolina, and Idaho. Roughly 38,000 vehicle owners could get a payout of about $2,700 each. The ruling confirmed that GM broke consumer protection laws by not disclosing the defect.

GM is now appealing the verdict, so stay tuned.

Vehicles Affected

If you own one of these 2010–2014 models, your vehicle may be involved in the GMC oil lawsuit 2025:

  • Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe

  • GMC Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL

Some Equinox and Terrain models have also had oil issues, but they weren’t part of this particular case.

What Should You Do?

Don’t wait for a recall—GM hasn’t issued one. Protect your vehicle by:

  • Checking your oil often – especially between oil changes

  • Keeping records – log every time you top off oil or go in for repairs

  • Speaking up – talk to your mechanic or dealership if you notice problems

  • Following updates – class actions can expand or change as new info comes out
